International Women’s Day, 2013

A few days ago (as part of a lengthy discussion which is deeply not worth the read), Clarissa said something very interesting on the subject of (Trans-Exclusionary/Eliminationist) Radical Feminists:

Radfems confuse feminism with an intense dislike of womanhood. Their rabid hatred for transwomen specifically betrays a rejection of the idea that anybody could “choose ” something as disgusting and intolerable as being a woman. For them, if you are fortunate enough to be a man, there has to be something deeply disturbing about you if you “choose ” to be a woman. The choice exists only in their minds, of course.

Radfems enjoy nothing more than listing mostly imaginary horrors of womanhood. They need to create and recreate the narrative universe where womanhood is permanently debased.

I’d never actually thought of it this way before, but frankly, I think that this assessment actually makes an awful lot of sense, and goes a long way towards explaining virtually all radfem behaviour; the transphobia, certainly, but also the hatred of ‘funfems,’ their evident horror at the idea that any woman anywhere might possibly enjoy (heterosexual) sex, their apparent belief that any ‘traditional’ trappings of femininity, adopted for any reason, are definitionally oppressive…all of these can be satisfactorily explained by a deeply-ingrained belief that the state of being a woman is inherently inferior to the state of being a man, and is in fact defined by permanent (and irrevocable) oppression by men. This even explains why so many of them reject discussions of intersectionality; in such a framework, the idea that all women are not uniformly oppressed (and that in fact, there are some women whose oppression as a female might not even be the primary oppression that they experience) seems anathema.

Now: today is International Women’s Day, and I must admit that my enthusiasm for the occasion had been dampened somewhat by a protracted argument (again, don’t waste your life reading it; you have better things to do) with just such a radfem*. But you know what:

I am proud to be a woman.

And now seems as good of a time as any to reiterate this fact.
